Established in 2000 as the world’s first “science consulate,” swissnex Boston is the first of a global network of five knowledge outposts including San Francisco (2003) , Singapore (2004), China (2007) and India (2009). swissnex Boston along with the Office of Science and Technology of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington D.C. and swissnex San Francisco constitute the official Swiss science network in North America.

This unique consulate does not issue visas or manage immigration issues (See Consulate General, New York). Rather, each swissnex outpost promotes knowledge exchange between Switzerland and host regions in higher education, technology, innovation, science and the arts. By enabling research collaborations, innovation promotion, best-practice exchange and skills training, swissnex Boston fosters the idea-generation and cooperation inherent in modern-day science diplomacy.

We achieve this by maintaining a dense network of contacts in cutting-edge fields, concomitantly strengthening Switzerland’s reputation as a center of science and supporting the internationalization efforts of Swiss institutions. See our particular efforts in various areas of expertise like education, entrepreneurship and arts.

Such a mission is enabled by swissnex’s joint operation between the State Secretariat for Education and Research of the Swiss Federal Department of the Interior and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. As a public-private partnership, swissnex Boston thrives on collaborating with and learning from the partners we assist, who range from Switzerland’s top universities and multinationals to high-tech startups and groundbreaking researchers.

Such pioneering partners enable us to innovate constantly, tailoring our business model to match the economic climate and brainstorming future challenges to better approach the hot topics.
